How to Get to the Colosseum: Metro, Bus, Tram, Taxi & Walking

The fastest way to get to the Colosseum is by metro: both Line B (Colosseo station) and the new Line C (Colosseo–Fori Imperiali station, opened December 2025) stop directly at the monument. Buses 51, 75, 85, 87, 117 and 118, and Tram 3 also stop at Piazza del Colosseo. A single public transport ticket costs €1.50.

Getting to the Colosseum by Metro (Fastest Option)

The Colosseum has its own metro station on two lines. Metro Line B stops at Colosseo station, whose exit faces the monument — the main entrance is a 2-minute walk. Since 16 December 2025, the Colosseum is also served by Metro Line C at the new Colosseo–Fori Imperiali station on Via dei Fori Imperiali, which connects underground with the Line B platforms. This means visitors from San Giovanni, Pigneto and eastern Rome now reach the Colosseum directly, without changing at Termini.

How to Get to the Colosseum from Termini Station

From Roma Termini, take Metro Line B toward Laurentina and get off at Colosseo, the second stop, about 3 minutes. Trains run every 3 to 5 minutes throughout the day. If you prefer to stay above ground, bus 75 runs from Termini to the Colosseum every 15 minutes and takes 12–13 minutes.

• Metro: Line B → direction Laurentina → 2 stops → Colosseo (~3 min, €1.50)
• Bus: Route 75 from the Termini bus bays (~12–13 min, same ticket)

Getting to the Colosseum by Bus

Six ATAC bus routes stop at the Colosseum, split between two stops on opposite sides of the monument. Which stop you need depends on your entrance: the Colosseo MB stop serves the main entrance on the north side, while San Gregorio and Celio Vibenna serve the Palatine Hill entrance on the south side.

Note that on Sundays, buses skip the Colosseo MB stop and use the southern stops instead.

Getting to the Colosseum by Tram

Tram Line 3 stops directly at Piazza del Colosseo and is the best public transport option from Trastevere, Ostiense and the San Giovanni corridor, areas that Metro Line B doesn’t serve. Trams run every 10–15 minutes from about 5:30 am to midnight, using the same €1.50 ticket as the metro and buses.

Rome Public Transport Tickets & Prices

Rome uses one integrated ticket for the metro, buses and trams. A single BIT (Biglietto Integrato a Tempo) ticket costs €1.50 and is valid for 100 minutes – unlimited bus and tram rides, but only one metro entry.

You can also tap a contactless card or phone directly at metro turnstiles and bus validators (Tap & Go), with daily charges capped at €8.50, the price of a 24-hour pass.

How to Get to the Colosseum from Rome’s Airports

From Fiumicino Airport (FCO), the fastest route is the Leonardo Express train to Termini (€14, 32 minutes, every 15 minutes) followed by Metro Line B to Colosseo — 50–60 minutes and about €15.50 in total. The cheaper alternative is the FR1 regional train to Ostiense (€8), then Metro Line B from the adjacent Piramide station.

From Ciampino Airport (CIA), take a shuttle bus to Termini (€6–7, around 40 minutes) and continue on Metro Line B.

Taxi, Uber and Driving to the Colosseum

A taxi from Termini to the Colosseum costs roughly €10–12; ask for “Piazza del Colosseo” and use only official white taxis with the Roma Capitale emblem. Uber operates legally in Rome but as a smaller premium service. The FREENOW and itTaxi apps, which book licensed white taxis at meter rates, are usually cheaper and faster.

Driving yourself is not recommended: the Colosseum sits inside Rome’s restricted traffic zone (ZTL), there is no parking at the site, and unauthorised ZTL entry triggers automatic fines.

Walking to the Colosseum

The Colosseum is walkable from almost anywhere in central Rome, and the approach on foot is part of the experience. The classic route runs from Piazza Venezia along Via dei Fori Imperiali – a flat, pedestrian-friendly 20-minute walk with the Roman Forum on your right and the Colosseum in view the entire way.
