Important Information
- Hours can shift for special events, exhibitions or extraordinary openings, so confirm on the official Parco Archeologico del Colosseo website (colosseo.it) close to your travel date — especially around public holidays.
- Final entry is one hour before the listed closing time. The ticket office and standby queue close 30 minutes earlier, another reason to book a timed slot in advance.

When Is the Colosseum closed?
Unlike many Roman museums that shut on Mondays, the Colosseum operates seven days a week. The Colosseum closes completely on just two confirmed dates each year:
25 December and 1 January.
On every other day, including public holidays like, Easter Sunday, Ferragosto (15 August) and all other Italian holidays – it runs on the normal seasonal schedule. It is open on 24 and 31 December, usually on winter hours.
There is no weekly closing day. Unlike many Roman museums that shut on Mondays, the Colosseum operates seven days a week.

The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill open at 9:00 AM(30 minutes after the Colosseum opens) and close at the same time as the Colosseum. All three sites are covered by one combined ticket, valid for 24 hours with one entry per site.

Best time to enter the Colosseum
The least crowded entry times are 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM and the final two hours before closing. The busiest window is 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM year-round.
In summer, the 8:30 am slot also avoids peak heat; late-afternoon slots offer cooler temperatures and softer light. Morning and late-afternoon slots sell out first, book as soon as your date opens, 30 days ahead.
How long does a visit take?
| Site | Time Needed |
|---|---|
| Colosseum only | 1.5 – 2 hours |
| Roman Forum + Palatine Hill | 1.5 – 2 hours |
| All three sites | 3.5 – 4 hours |
| With underground or arena floor tour | Add 45 – 75 minutes |
Do not book a slot later than 2 hours before closing if you plan to see the Colosseum properly, and no later than 4 hours before closing to cover all three sites.
Frequently asked questions
1. Does the entry ticket let me skip the line?
It lets you skip the ticket-purchase queue, but you still pass through the standard security line. For the fastest entry, consider a dedicated skip-the-line ticket.
2. Can I upgrade to see the arena floor later?
No. Arena floor and underground access must be purchased in advance as a separate ticket or guided tour — they cannot be added on the day.
3. How long is the ticket valid?
Your Colosseum entry is for a specific time slot. The Forum and Palatine portion is valid the same day or within 24 hours, depending on the partner.
